Get ready for celestial phenomena coming to Mallorca!

July 30, 2025

No, we’re not referring to Bonnie Tyler singing her global hit, ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ in Port Adriano on 16th August, though a handful of tickets remain available.

Tears of Saint Lawrence

Before then, heavenly entertainment comes in the form of the annual Perseid meteor shower visible in the night’s sky. The ‘Tears of Saint Lawrence’, as the phenomenon is also known, are a dazzling display of shooting stars lasting several days.

A highlight of the astronomical calendar, the shower is expected to reach its peak on the night of Tuesday, August 12th 2025, into the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 13th.

While the brightness of a waning Gibbous moon may drown out visibility of the meteor shower until after bedtime, setting an alarm for 03:45h should ensure guests have a couple of hours of, ahem, ‘light entertainment’.

Viewing from shore can be compromised by unavoidable light pollution, but luckily yacht dwellers are well placed to find a spot at anchor, far away from external sources of illumination. Until dawn (around 06:00h) the constellation Perseus will be high in the northeastern sky.

The best anchorages will be those away from Palma and Mallorca’s main resorts; off the mountainous west coast and to the south, in other words.

Mallorca total eclipse 2026

While the Perseid meteor showers occur each year, a much rarer phenomenon is coming to Mallorca next year.

On 12th August 2026, Mallorca’s west coast will be pitched into complete darkness before sunset for up to two minutes. The last two total eclipses in Spain occurred in 1905 and 1953, so this rare astronomical event is not to be missed!

Imagine your guests witnessing a total solar eclipse just 2.5° above the western horizon, with the sun transforming into a spectacular corona against a stunning Mediterranean backdrop. Chances of clear skies are around 75% at this time of year.

The time to start planning your visit to Mallorca is NOW! Berths and anchorages will be in great demand, with many yachts expected to visit especially for this once-in-a-generation phenomenon.

The event will attract thousands of eclipse-chasing tourists to Mallorca, so demand for strategically-located restaurants and vantage points along the west coast will be high too.

Your guests on board will witness something remarkable; a totally eclipsed sun that appears oval-shaped due to atmospheric refraction. This phenomenon occurs only when totality happens so close to the horizon.
