Mallorca Solar Eclipse 2026: Plan Before The Curfew
On 12 August 2026, Mallorca and the Balearic Islands will experience one of the rarest natural events of the century: a total solar eclipse at sunset.
A natural phenomenon. The sun, the moon, the sea and the horizon.
And yet, somehow, we have already found a way to regulate it.
In a move that brings back a familiar reflex from recent years, the authorities have announced traffic controls, access restrictions and regulated mobility around some of the most popular viewing areas. Apparently, even an eclipse now requires planning, paperwork, reservations and a strategy.
Luckily, the eclipse happens at sunset. Had it taken place at midday, who knows what else might have been invented to prevent people from looking up.
Jokes aside, this will be an extraordinary moment for yachts cruising the Balearics — but also one that will require serious preparation. With roads restricted, popular viewpoints controlled and a high concentration of boats expected at sea, the best eclipse experience will belong to those who plan early.

Safety first: official maritime recommendations
Spanish maritime authorities are already preparing for the eclipse, as a high concentration of yachts and pleasure craft is expected in the best viewing areas.
Captains are advised to plan their route and observation point in advance, check the latest weather and sea conditions, avoid restricted or busy navigation areas, keep proper lookout, maintain listening watch on VHF Channel 16, check navigation lights and safety equipment, and use only certified eclipse glasses or approved solar filters.
