The arrival of the America’s Cup in Barcelona has resulted in many more comings and goings of yachts and crew passing through. In order to handle the increased traffic and to control movements more stringently, immigration authorities now require Seaman’s Books, with effect from 2nd September.
The move brings Barcelona into line with Palma, where this protocol was brought in at the start of 2024. In an official communiqué from the border force police, employment letters, contracts, etc, will no longer be accepted as proof of seafarer status.
As such, any non-EU arrivals embarking yachts in Barcelona from September 2nd will be subject to regular visa controls, with their permitted days in Schengen counting down. Yacht crew will be able to stamp out (on board) in Barcelona only upon presentation of a Seaman’s Book.
Unchanged is the stamping in (off) procedure. Crew members disembarking and entering Spanish territory must be in possession of the necessary visa to stay in or travel through the territory, as well as the economic means to support themselves during their stay. Proof of accommodation for the duration, an invitation letter, or a flight ticket are required.
This new measure is likely to affect a large number of crew, who are strongly advised to apply for a Seaman’s Book without delay. In the meantime, our ESTELA colleagues in Barcelona may have a workaround for crew without a Seaman’s Book.
The ESTELA office is conveniently located in Port Vell, with the new mobile immigration unit parked just a few steps from our front door. For assistance with stamping, or anything else you need in Barcelona, contact yachts.barcelona@estelashipping.net, or call/WhatsApp +34 650 39 51 13.
Note that in Barcelona, using a port agent is COMPULSORY. Your agent must make an immigration appointment in advance, on your behalf. From 2nd September, for the duration of the America’s Cup event, two time slots are offered daily from Monday to Friday only, between 09:00h-09:45h and 11:30-12:00h. To avoid delays or complications, documentation should be submitted in advance. Contact our Barcelona colleagues for details.
