Update: MCA Guidance on Lithium-Ion Battery Storage and Charging

On 19 December 2025, the MCA published Amendment 1 to MGN 681 (M) to update the requirements and best-practice guidance for the safe storage, handling, and charging of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.

It emphasizes the use of custom storage options for batteries and chargers that incorporate specific safety features. Key requirements now include:

  1. Charging to take place within a certified container
  2. Charging capability with the container remaining closed
  3. Temperature-rise detection with automated alert systems
  4. Application of an extinguishing medium without opening the cabinet
  5. Off-gas venting to prevent the build-up of explosive gases
  6. Fire insulation and explosion-resistant construction
  7. Automatic shutdown of charging in the event of a fault or overheating
  8. Defined and validated maximum capacity limits (kWh)
  9. Insulation to prevent fire spread

Additionally,  all battery storage and charging containers/boxes must be approved and certificated by a UK Nominated Body by 1 January 2027.
