40m Sunseeker ‘Elysium’ listed for auction in Gibraltar

Arrested in Port Adriano in 2023, the custom Sunseeker 131 yacht is to be sold at auction, with bids closing at noon on 28th January 2025 -

M/Y Elysium had been subject of a high profile legal dispute between a UK lawyer and a member of the Saudi royal family.

The case stems from 2011 when Ronald Gibbs was given power of attorney over a $25 million trust fund intended for a Paris property purchase. Instead, the money was used to buy properties worldwide, as well as the Sunseeker yacht for £17 million in 2018.

A UK court order in February 2024 required Gibbs to repay $39.5 million to HRH Princess Deema Bint Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Despite claiming in UK courts that he was virtually penniless, Gibbs was found to have substantial assets in the Cayman Islands, valued at $45 million, including the yacht.

Calling all Facebook admins, we need your help!

If, like us at ESTELA, you manage an active Facebook Page and/or Group in the yachting industry, you may have been having issues recently due to Meta’s algorithmic content moderation.

Our jobs board ‘Yacht Crew Recruitment’ (https://facebook.com/groups/YachtCrewRecruitment/) was recently suspended for ostensibly breaching one or more of Meta’s posting rules.

Unhelpfully, the offending posts are not visible to us, but our assumption is that sharing jobs that stipulate male/female candidates only, due to cabin arrangements, are considered by Meta to be ‘illegal’. This is, of course, perfectly standard in the world in which we operate, but “computer says NO”.

It appears that Meta’s appeal process is also automated, so the reply received to our appeal for a (human) review merely echoed their first robotic denial. An appeal to the Company’s Oversight Board has long been lodged, but to no avail.

We have been trying all other avenues to contact actual humans at Meta/Facebook who may be able to assist us with the Group that we have taken many years to grow. ESTELA doesn’t monetise the group in any way; it is simply there to provide a service for the 60,000 yachties that have signed up.

We have tried to contact country management here in Spain, as well as content moderation heads in Menlo Park, using the likes of LinkedIn, Facebook itself, Instagram and via email addresses available publicly.

So far, response has been zero. If you have experienced the same problem, we would like to hear from you. If you have managed to resolve the same problem, we *REALLY* want to hear from you! And should you have a contact at Meta who may be able to connect us with the relevant department, we would be extremely grateful for an introduction.

We are more than happy to comply with whatever rules Meta sets -- if no carve-out for maritime recruitment can be made -- but we need to have a dialogue in order to come to an understanding and re-activate our Group.

Here at ESTELA we are fortunately not dependent in any way on Meta (or any other social media platform) to conduct our business, but this does demonstrate the perils of building one’s business on any third party’s platform.
